Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Fibroids are benign tumors that grow within the muscle tissue of the uterus. They are very common, often developing in women between the ages of 35-54. They can cause a variety of symptoms, like heavy and prolonged bleeding with menstruation or bulk type symptoms because of the increased size of the uterus. These bulk type symptoms include frequent urination and bladder urgency, pelvic fullness/bloating, and back pain. Collectively, these symptoms can cause significant discomfort and affect one’s quality of life.

Several treatment options for fibroids exist. These include medications (typically oral contraceptives or other forms of hormonal therapy) and surgery (hysterectomy and myomectomy). At Doylestown Hospital, we also offer Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), which is a safe and effective minimally invasive alternative. Compared to surgery, the procedure is performed without general anesthesia and no large incisions are required, allowing for quicker recovery times.
